To drive in Melbourne, you must first obtain a learner’s permit. To do this, visit a local VicRoads office in person with the necessary paperwork, which includes identification, proof of age, and evidence of where you live. After your documents are verified, you’ll need to pass the Driver Knowledge Test. Once you have your learner’s permit, you must complete 120 hours of supervised driving practice, including 20 hours of night driving. Only after meeting these requirements can you take the driving exam to get your probationary (P) licence. This process ensures you gain the necessary skills and experience to drive safely on the roads.
After you have successfully finished your P1 (red P plate) term, the P2 (green P plate) time starts. If there are no fines, suspensions, or demerit points resulting from reckless driving or other infractions, this phase will finish after three years. Certain guidelines and limitations are in effect during the P2 period, including limitations on the number of passengers you may transport and prohibitions on using a cell phone while operating a vehicle.
