Obtaining an International Driver’s License in Australia

Coming to Australia is an exciting adventure! To help you with your transition, Sprint has courses designed to help you get your international driver’s license to drive in Victoria. When considering a driving school like Sprint, you should consider why driving schools are essential and how they will prepare you for both driving tests and driving on Australian roads.

How Sprint Helps You Get Your International Driver’s License

Sprint hires local, professional staff to teach their classes. These classes will help prepare you if you are a new driver. They are also great refreshers for those looking to drive safer. Overseas drivers will find that Sprint’s driving courses will help prepare them directly for the international driver’s license test. The courses do this by combining knowledge with hands on experiences.

Sprint driving courses address a piece of driver preparation that is often ignored: the ability to anticipate the unexpected. Through research and practice, Sprint has designed their courses to help new drivers develop this skill. Building anticipation in this way may help reduce crash rates.

Preparing for the International Driver’s License Tests

The International Driver’s License is obtained by passing four different tests:

  • learner permit test
  • hazard perception test
  • eye sight test
  • practical driving test

The kind of license you will be eligible for will depend on how long you plan on staying in Australia. If you hold an overseas license issued by certain countries, you may be able to transfer your license over without passing additional tests in Australia.

Sprint’s international driver’s license classes will help you through this process with experienced staff. These staff members will advise you on what to do and what to avoid when you go to complete your international driver’s license test.

Exemptions for International Driver’s License Applicants

You will need to make an appointment with VicRoads to have your license switched over if you hold an overseas license and are seeking reciprocity. Drivers with overseas licenses with temporary visas are not required to obtain a new license, as long as their license has an English translation. This rule does not apply to overseas learners permits. Those with learner’s permits from overseas will not be allowed to use them to drive in Australia.

An international driver’s license is not necessarily valid on its own. You must carry your international driver’s license and your overseas driving permit together when you are driving.

Qualifying for an International Driver’s License

In order to recognize your prior driving experience, your current overseas license will need to be verified. It may be temporary collected and sent to be checked by professionals depending on the country of origin. You must be at least 18 years old to be issues a permit to drive in Victoria. If you are under 21 years old and have had a license for less than 12 months, you may be issued a probationary permit to drive until your international driver’s license is approved.

In order to be issued a full international driver’s license enabling you to drive in Victoria, you must meet the following requirements:

  • 21 years of age or more
  • Have held and overseas probationary license for at least three years or more
  • Have held an overseas full driver’s license
