How Long Can You Drive on an Overseas Licence in Victoria?

If You’re Living in Victoria Long Term

If you are moving to Victoria and plan to live here for more than six months, you may need to convert your overseas licence to a Victorian one. The exact requirements depend on your visa status, licence type, country of issue, and personal circumstances.

    Check Your Specific Requirements

VicRoads provides a requirements checker to confirm whether you can keep driving on your overseas licence and what steps you need to take to convert it. This is the best source for current rules, as requirements can change.

    Overseas Licence Conversion Requirements

Requirements can vary depending on your individual circumstances, so it’s best to check directly with VicRoads.

If your overseas licence is from a recognised country by VicRoads, in many cases you may not need to pass a Victorian drive test to convert your licence.

    However, it depends on:

    • your country
    • your age
    • how long you have held the licence
    • when the licence was first issued

From 2025, some previously recognised countries may now require tests for overseas drivers.

In those cases, applicants may need to complete:

    • Learner Permit Test
    • Hazard Perception Test
    • Drive Test

Use the VicRoads requirements checker to see what you need to do to convert your overseas car or motorcycle licence in your own specific case.

The Overseas Licence Conversion Process — Step by Step

    01
    Check Your Requirements

Use the VicRoads requirements checker first. It will help confirm your category, the documents you need, and whether any tests apply to your situation.

    02
    Prepare Your Documents

You may need your overseas licence, proof of identity, proof of Victorian address, and an English translation or International Driving Permit if your licence is not in English.

    03
    Complete Any Required Tests

Depending on your circumstances, VicRoads may require a Learner Permit Test, Hazard Perception Test, and Drive Test before issuing a Victorian licence.

    04
    Get Test-Ready with Sprint

If you need to sit the drive test, Sprint can help you prepare with focused lessons on Melbourne road rules, test expectations, and the routes used around your nearest test centre.

    Driving in Melbourne: What’s Different

Even experienced international drivers encounter rules in Melbourne that don’t exist anywhere else. Our instructors cover all of these in your lessons.

    Hook Turns

Unique to Melbourne’s CBD — you turn right from the left lane. Required at specific intersections to avoid blocking tram lines.

    Tram Rules

You must stop behind a tram when it opens its doors unless there is a raised safety zone separating passengers from traffic.

    Give Way at Roundabouts

In Australia, you give way to vehicles already in the roundabout, which can be different from the road rules in some other countries.

    Left-Hand Traffic

Drivers from right-hand traffic countries often need time to adjust to lane positioning, turning, and observation habits.

    Speed Zones

Speed limits are in km/h, with school zones, residential limits, and temporary construction limits all closely enforced.

    Clearways & Parking Rules

Clearway signs prohibit stopping during certain times, and parking restrictions are strictly enforced across Melbourne.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert my overseas driver’s licence to a Victorian licence? +
Yes — provided you pass the required tests. If your licence is from a recognised country, you may be exempt from the practical driving test and only need to visit VicRoads to complete the conversion. If your country is not on the recognised list, you will need to pass the Learner Permit Test, Hazard Perception Test, and a practical driving test. Sprint Driving School can help you prepare for all of these.
How long can I drive in Victoria with an overseas licence? +
It depends on your visa status. If you hold a temporary visa, you can drive on your overseas licence for as long as your visa remains valid, provided your licence is current and either written in English or accompanied by an official English translation or International Driving Permit (IDP).
If you are granted Australian permanent residency, you have three months from the date your residency is granted to obtain a Victorian driver’s licence.
After that three-month period, you can no longer drive in Victoria on your overseas licence – even if it is still valid.
It’s important not to leave this too late, as booking a VicRoads test and completing any necessary preparation takes time.
What documents do I need to convert my overseas licence? +
You will typically need: your current overseas driver’s licence, proof of identity (passport), proof of your visa status, and if your licence is not in English, an official English translation or International Driving Permit. Check the VicRoads website for the full and current document checklist before your appointment.
What is the Hazard Perception Test and how do I prepare for it? +
The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is a computer-based test that assesses your ability to identify developing hazards on the road — pedestrians stepping out, cars pulling out of driveways, cyclists, and similar situations. It can be taken online or in person at a VicRoads office. You can practise for it using the official VicRoads HPT practice tool. There is no limit on the number of attempts, but a fee applies for each attempt.
Do I need to take a driving test to convert my overseas licence? +
It depends on your country of origin. Licence holders from recognised countries are exempt from the practical driving test. Holders from experienced driver countries are exempt if they are 25 or older. Everyone else must sit the full practical driving test. Sprint Driving School can help you prepare for the practical test with intensive, focused lessons on the specific routes and criteria used by VicRoads examiners.
How long does the conversion process take? +
The administrative conversion at VicRoads can often be completed in a single business day, including the Learner Permit Test, Hazard Perception Test, and practical driving test — provided you are well prepared and have all your documents. The preparation time before your VicRoads appointment depends on your current driving ability and which tests you need to sit. Sprint’s intensive lessons are designed to get you ready as quickly as possible.
Can I drive with my overseas licence while waiting for the conversion? +
Yes — you may continue driving in Victoria while your overseas licence conversion is in progress, provided you hold a valid overseas driver’s licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP).
However, once you are granted Australian permanent residency, Victorian licensing rules apply immediately.
From the date your residency is granted, you have three months to obtain a Victorian driver’s licence. If you do not convert within this period, you can no longer drive in Victoria on your overseas licence.
If you attempt the VicRoads driving test and do not pass, you are generally not permitted to continue driving until you meet all licensing requirements.
This makes proper test preparation with a qualified instructor particularly important.
