RESTRICTIONS TO GET YOUR PROVISIONAL LICENSE IN VICTORIA

What Are The Restrictions To Get Your Provisional License In Victoria?

Life for youngsters is supposed to be relaxing and blissful.  However, when it comes to driving, sometimes it tends to be the opposite. In Victoria, Australia, there are several restrictions and rules that you should be aware of and abide by. There is a reason for imposing all these restrictions – to avoid car crashes and fatalities on the roads. If you are a young driver in Victoria, you need to get learner’s permit and probationary license before applying for your full license. This article outlines the license restrictions that apply to young drivers.

Learner’s Permit:

In Victoria, the first license you will get is your learner’s permit. With this license, you can learn to drive under the supervision of a fully licensed driver. After passing the requirements, you can take your driving test and apply for a probationary license. To get your learner’s permit, you must be at least 16 years old and pass the knowledge test.

Provisional License:

In order for obtaining your P plates, you must be at least 18 years old.

  • If you are between 18 and 21, you must complete at least 120 hours of learner training including 20 hours of night driving. Also, you must have had your learners permit for at least 12 months.
  • If you are between 21 and 25, you must have had your learners permit for at least 6 months and those who are 25 years old or more, you must have had your permit for 3 months.

In addition to meeting all these requirements, you need to pass the hazard perception test that you can take from the age of 17 years and 11 months.   Once you’ve passed your driving test, you will get a red P-Plate if you are under 21 that you must stay on for 12 months before applying for your green P-plate. You must have this green P-plate for at least three years before applying for a full-license.
