At Sprint Driving School, we understand that driving requirements can change with age — and that staying confident behind the wheel is essential for maintaining independence. Our senior driving lessons in Melbourne are specifically designed for mature drivers, whether you want to refresh skills you haven’t used in a while, adapt to changes in road rules or vehicle technology, or prepare for a VicRoads medical assessment or Older Driver Licence Assessment (ODLA).
Every lesson is structured around your individual needs and pace. There’s no pressure, no judgement, and no rushing. Our instructors are experienced in working with older drivers and understand that the challenges facing a driver in their 70s or 80s are very different from those facing a learner driver — and they teach accordingly.
Whether you’ve been driving for 50 years or haven’t been behind the wheel for a few months, we’ll meet you where you are and help you get to where you want to be. Call us today or enquire online to book your first lesson.
Victoria has specific licensing requirements for drivers over 70. Understanding what’s required – and preparing properly – means you can continue driving with confidence and peace of mind.
From age 70, Victorian drivers must have their fitness to drive assessed by a doctor annually. Your GP completes a medical report which is submitted to VicRoads. If your doctor has concerns, they may refer you for further assessment.
If VicRoads or your doctor requires further assessment of your driving ability, you may be referred for an ODLA — a practical on-road evaluation conducted by a VicRoads-approved occupational therapist or driving assessor. Sprint lessons help you prepare specifically for this assessment.
Certain medical conditions — including vision changes, diabetes, heart conditions, and neurological changes — can affect your licence. If your doctor has raised concerns or placed conditions on your licence, refresher lessons can help demonstrate your ability to drive safely within those conditions.
VicRoads may issue a restricted licence limiting driving to certain areas, times, or conditions (for example, daytime only or within a specific radius). If you’ve received a restriction and want to work towards having it reviewed, structured lessons with a qualified instructor can support that process.
Important: Sprint Driving School provides driving lessons and preparation — we are not a medical or occupational therapy service. For advice on your specific medical situation or licence conditions, speak with your GP or contact VicRoads directly on 13 11 71.
Not all driving instructors are experienced in working with mature drivers. The approach that works for a 17-year-old learner is very different from what works for a driver in their 70s who has decades of experience but may be facing changes in reaction time, vision, or confidence.
Sprint’s instructors are VicRoads accredited, hold a Certificate III or IV in Driving Instruction, and carry current police clearances. For senior lessons specifically, our team takes time to understand your driving history, your current concerns, and what you want to achieve from the lessons — whether that’s rebuilding confidence after a break from driving, preparing for a VicRoads assessment, or simply making sure your skills are as sharp as they can be.
Lessons are conducted in dual-control vehicles. There’s no pressure to perform, no rushing through content, and no judgement. Male and female instructors are available across metropolitan Melbourne, seven days a week, 8am to 7.30pm.
Regular refresher lessons aren’t just for drivers who’ve had problems — they’re a proactive way to stay safe, stay legal, and stay independent. Here’s what our senior students consistently tell us they gain from lessons:
Many senior drivers find that their confidence has gradually eroded — avoiding certain roads, driving less at night, or feeling anxious in heavy traffic. Structured lessons in a supportive environment rebuild that confidence systematically.
Road rules change. Hook turn rules, give way at roundabouts, mobile phone laws, and speed zone signage have all been updated in recent years. Lessons cover the current rules so you’re not caught out by changes you weren’t aware of.
Reversing cameras, lane assist, automatic emergency braking, and electronic parking brakes are now standard in many vehicles. If you’ve recently changed cars, lessons help you get comfortable with technology that wasn’t there in your previous vehicle.
If you’ve been referred for an ODLA or VicRoads assessment, structured lessons with a qualified instructor are the most effective way to prepare. Your instructor will work through the specific skills assessed and give you honest feedback on where you stand.
Sometimes family members raise concerns about a senior driver’s ability — and sometimes those concerns are not fully warranted. A qualified instructor can provide an objective, professional assessment of your current driving standard, which can be reassuring for both you and your family.
For many older Australians, driving is directly linked to independence — getting to medical appointments, visiting family, doing the shopping. Keeping your licence means keeping that independence. Refresher lessons are a small investment in something that matters enormously.
Senior driving lessons are tailored to your individual situation — there’s no fixed curriculum. Your first lesson begins with a conversation about your driving history, your current concerns, and what you want to achieve. From there, your instructor designs a programme around your specific needs. Common areas covered include:
Identifying and responding to hazards early — pedestrians, cyclists, merging traffic, and changing conditions. Reaction time naturally slows with age; good scanning technique compensates for this effectively.
Roundabouts, T-intersections, traffic lights, and hook turns — including the current give way rules which have changed since many senior drivers first learned to drive.
Merging, lane changing, maintaining appropriate speed, and managing the higher demands of freeway driving — including Melbourne’s CityLink and EastLink toll roads.
Reverse parallel parking, angle parking, three-point turns, and using reversing cameras correctly. Parking is one of the most commonly cited areas of concern for senior drivers returning to lessons.
Reversing cameras, parking sensors, lane departure warnings, automatic emergency braking, and electronic handbrakes. Understanding what these systems do — and what they don’t do — makes driving safer and less stressful.
If you’ve been referred for an Older Driver Licence Assessment, your instructor will work through the specific criteria assessed — observation, lane positioning, speed management, and decision-making — so you know exactly what to expect and how to demonstrate your best driving.
Age should never stop you from enjoying the independence that comes with driving. Whether you want to refresh your skills, prepare for a VicRoads assessment, or simply feel more confident on Melbourne’s roads, Sprint’s senior driving lessons are designed around you — your pace, your needs, and your goals.

Senior driving lessons help older drivers refresh their road knowledge, adapt to modern traffic conditions, and improve confidence. They also ensure safe driving habits are maintained as skills or reflexes change with age.
There’s no set age, but many seniors choose refresher lessons from around 60 years onwards, especially if they feel less confident, haven’t driven for a while, or need to prepare for a driving test renewal.
Not always. Senior lessons are mainly to boost confidence and update skills. However, in some states, older drivers may be required to sit for a medical or driving assessment – and lessons help with preparation.
Yes. Our lessons are ideal for preparing seniors for any required driving assessments or medical reviews, making the renewal process less stressful.
It depends on the individual. Some seniors feel confident after just one refresher lesson, while others may prefer a few sessions for ongoing support.
