Caulfield Driving School

Caulfield asks more of a learner than a quiet suburb does, which is exactly why it is good practice. The main roads carry trams: route 64 runs down Hawthorn Road and route 67 runs along Glen Huntly Road, with the Glenhuntly tram depot on Glen Huntly Road itself. That means learning to turn right across live tram tracks, stopping behind a tram while passengers get on and off, and holding a lane next to one without drifting. Dandenong Road adds wide multi-lane driving with service roads and central medians, and Balaclava Road, Kooyong Road and Glen Eira Road give you busy signalised intersections to read.

There is a rail side to Caulfield too. Caulfield station is a major interchange where the Frankston, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines meet, so the surrounding streets get heavy pedestrian and bus movement at peak times. On Caulfield Cup weekends the roads around Caulfield Racecourse fill with event traffic, which is real-world congestion practice you cannot stage on a closed course. Add the dense on-street and permit parking through the Monash campus precinct and the shopping strips, and Caulfield becomes one of the better places in the south east to master parallel parking before your test.

Your instructor builds all of this into the lessons in a sensible order, starting on the quieter residential streets and working up to the tram roads and arterials as your confidence grows. As you progress, lessons can extend into Glen Huntly, Carnegie, Elsternwick and Malvern so you are ready for anything the assessor puts in front of you at Heatherton.

Caulfield learners sit the practical test at the VicRoads Heatherton centre, 77 Corporate Drive, about a 15 minute drive south east. Your final lessons focus on getting you test-ready for that centre and its routes, and your instructor knows them well.
