Police are diligently looking for a driver who hit two road workers in Melbourne’s South East on November 9, killing one and injuring the other before fleeing from the scene. Another man who picked up this driver in another car to help him is also wanted by the police.
Jarrod Dwyer, the Detective Acting Senior Sergeant, said that the two road workers were struck by a red Holden at 7.15am when they were arranging cones on the road near the intersection of Hall Road and Lats Avenue in Carrum Downs. The 44-year-old Bayswater man suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene while a 38-year-old Traralgon man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Mr Jarrod Dwyer also added that the driver of the Holden was travelling above the 40km/h” speed limit when he hit the two workers and then crashed the workers’ ute that was pushed into a tree. He also stated that two Samaritans stopped to help the driver, but he got out of his vehicle and fled from the scene. One person chased him but could not keep track of him. It is also said that the driver had some minor injuries on his face.
According to Police, the driver was picked up by a man in a black Hyundai SUV near Rowellyn Avenue and was seen heading on Ballerto Road at 7.45am. The photo of the driver whose age is predicted to be in 30s has been released and police have insisted people who witnessed the accident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Aggressive driving, getting distracted and not abiding by the speed limit have taken the life of a worker and caused life-threatening injuries to another man.
